About The Founder

As an avid outdoorsman who loves rock climbing, skiing, camping, and mountain climbing, Erik Sauer was a thriving entrepreneur with a successful business and family man who loved living the active life with his family. But all of that changed dramatically in the spring of 2008. For several months, Erik had been plagued by crippling fatigue and, increasingly, blinding headaches that no amount of aspirin could remedy. He knew that something was very, very wrong.

On May 20, 2008 Erik was diagnosed Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML). One week later, Erik’s wife Lisa gave birth to their son Joey. Several days later, Erik entered Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he spent four rocky months, receiving chemotherapy and, ultimately, a bone marrow transplant.

The There Goes My Hero Foundation is the result of Erik’s own fight with the disease, and his own decision to help others fight as well. Today the foundation funds blood cancer research, family support programs, and education programs to encourage public support and use of the bone marrow registry.

Please join Erik in the fight and Become a Hero by donating your strength, your compassion, and your dollars to those who are fighting for survival—and fighting for their families—against cancer.
