My Experience as a Volunteer with There Goes My Hero

When my mom was diagnosed with leukemia more than ten years ago, it completely shook our family to the core. She was the glue that held us all together, and the realization that our family dynamics would change was a harsh reality for all of us. Everything happened very suddenly, and we had to quickly adjust to our new normal. We were overwhelmed with questions and sought answers. We all needed support—not only for my mom, but also for my dad and my brother, as we stepped into the role of her caregivers. That experience made me understand the importance of information, communication, education, and the power of words.

The reason I say this is that being well-informed provided us with the tools to make crucial decisions, and I’m happy to share that the help and support we received during that time has given my mom the opportunity to live a great life today. When I first discovered There Goes My Hero, I was impressed by the support the organization offers to individuals living with blood cancer. I felt that this would be a perfect opportunity for me to get involved as a volunteer blog writer. I could see that the resources provided are extremely valuable to both patients and their families. Being a blog writer has given me the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of those living with blood cancer through my words.

It has been an honor for me to have the opportunity to champion the cause of those who are underrepresented on the bone marrow registry. Blogging can be a powerful tool for advocacy and awareness, so I felt happy that I could contribute in this way.  While I have volunteered in the past through physical and more tangible means, I feel that writing has allowed me to reach a wider audience, as there are spaces that words can reach that I physically cannot. Working with Andrea Hernandez and Olivia Lewis has been a pleasant experience for me. They have made my time here enjoyable and ensured that I feel like part of the team. I love that we can use our talents effectively, and the reward has come from knowing that my words have made an impact in helping others.
