Tell us about yourself.

My name is Elizabeth Liu, and I am a rising high school sophomore at The Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland. Outside of being a student, I am passionate about art, music, and community. In my spare time, I love exploring creative liberties through painting, playing the piano, or playing the cello. Additionally, I enjoy taking nature walks, spending time at study cafes, and hanging out with friends. What truly serves as my source of motivation stems from my commitment to community service. Connecting with diverse individuals and engaging with various activities to support my community brings me a deep sense of purpose and joy.

When did you begin volunteering with There Goes My Hero?

This past July, I volunteered with There Goes My Hero for several days. Although my time with Hero was brief, I thoroughly enjoyed decorating and customizing cards of encouragement while speaking with staff members in the office lounge. It was a meaningful experience, knowing that my small contributions would help spread positivity for patients in need. I look forward to furthering my volunteering efforts with There Goes My Hero in the future!

Why do you volunteer with There Goes My Hero?

Before discovering There Goes My Hero, I was motivated by a genuine desire to help the community. While I don’t have a personal connection to patients with blood cancer, I wanted to contribute in any way I could. I was inspired by There Goes My Hero’s mission and sought to get involved. For me, community service is about making a difference, no matter how small. With my passion for the arts, I greatly valued my time in taking initiative to make the cards of encouragement. In the future, whether the cards are used for care bags or placed on dining trays, I hope they will bring a smile to someone’s face.

What was your favorite volunteering experience with There Goes My Hero?

I loved making the cards! Each card contains a unique design and a playful pun. It may be slightly cheesy but they are intended to spread good humor. My goal in making the cards was to bring a smile or a laugh to someone’s day. Outside of making the cards, I also enjoyed interacting with the staff members, who were incredibly supportive and welcoming. Throughout the process, staff members frequently stopped by to share encouraging comments and words of motivation.

What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering with There Goes My Hero?

If you have the time, interest, and passion for community service, I highly encourage you to take the initiative in getting involved! There Goes My Hero offers a special and meaningful experience, regardless of how you decide to contribute. At the end of the day, everyone is working towards the same goal: to help support patients battling against cancer. Even dedicating just one hour of your time is valuable and impactful. Small steps can lead to significant change. With its inspiring mission, There Goes My Hero not only allows you to make a difference in someone’s life but also offers the opportunity for personal growth to become a better version of yourself.
